MITSUBISHI ECLIPSE SPORTBACK:
The Eclipse nameplate has continued to evolve over the years, despite having no direct connection to the iconic sports coupe produced between 1989 and 2011. It was first revived on the Eclipse Cross crossover, and now Mitsubishi Motors has announced the new Eclipse Sportback EV for the North American market.
Working with Alliance partner Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., Mitsubishi Motors will launch the Eclipse Sportback EV in North America as a 2027 model later this year. While the vehicle utilizes the architecture of the next-generation Nissan LEAF, it has been extensively differentiated through a series of bespoke Mitsubishi design treatments, creating a more distinctive and brand-specific appearance.
Although it shares its foundations with the latest Nissan LEAF, the Eclipse Sportback EV introduces several styling tweaks of its own. Unique front and rear bumpers help create a more distinctive appearance, while the familiar boomerang-shaped headlights gain additional design detailing for extra visual flair. Around the back, Mitsubishi has reworked the taillight signature, though it stops short of using the striking 3D-effect lighting elements reserved for premium LEAF variants. For now, Mitsubishi is keeping the cabin of the Eclipse Sportback EV under wraps. Based on its close relationship with the Nissan LEAF, the interior is expected to feature a similar design, highlighted by a modern two-spoke steering wheel and a digital instrument display.
Technical specifications for the Mitsubishi Eclipse Sportback EV have not yet been disclosed. In the United States, the current Nissan LEAF is offered with a front-mounted electric motor producing 218 horsepower and a 75-kWh battery pack. At its debut, Nissan also announced variants featuring a 177-horsepower motor paired with a 52-kWh battery, although those versions have yet to reach the market. As a result, it remains possible that Mitsubishi could position the Eclipse Sportback EV with a smaller battery and lower-output electric powertrain than its Nissan counterpart.
The Eclipse Sportback EV is part of Mitsubishi Motors’ Momentum 2030 business plan. This strategy focuses on four main areas: electrification, a new and expanded vehicle lineup, a modern retail sales model, and a stronger dealer network.
Mitsubishi is expected to reveal more about the Eclipse Sportback EV soon, including key information such as powertrain specifications, pricing, and the vehicle’s market launch timeline.
