TOYOTA RAV4 GR SPORT PHEV
Toyota Motor Corporation has confirmed that the new Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid will make its official debut on March 9, 2026. Joining the range will be a more aggressive Toyota RAV4 GR Sport model, combining sporty styling cues with the strong performance and sharper handling expected from Toyota’s plug-in hybrid technology.

The new Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid is designed to improve the SUV’s “go anywhere, do anything” concept. It combines off-road capability with the ability to provide electrical power for outdoor activities.
The plug-in hybrid system uses a large battery and supports high-output charging, helping increase electric driving range and performance. This gives the SUV stronger acceleration while still being environmentally efficient.
A major highlight of the expanded range is the arrival of the Toyota RAV4 GR Sport, a performance-oriented version that pairs aggressive styling with the added power and responsiveness of Toyota’s PHEV technology.
With the new model included, the Toyota RAV4 family now consists of four distinct variants: the Z (HEV), Adventure (HEV), Z (PHEV), and the sporty GR Sport (PHEV).
POWERTRAIN
According to Toyota Motor Corporation, the new Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid introduces a next-generation plug-in hybrid system appearing in a production model for the very first time.
At its core is the same 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine used in the HEV version, generating 186 PS and 229 Nm of torque. Paired with Toyota’s newly developed PHEV technology and a larger-capacity battery, the system delivers a combined output of 329 PS — promising both strong acceleration and improved efficiency.
A major technological upgrade in the new Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid comes from its power control unit, which now uses advanced silicon carbide (SiC) semiconductors. By reducing energy loss and improving efficiency, the system helps boost the SUV’s electric-only driving range from roughly 95 km in earlier models to about 150 km on a single charge.
One of the notable features of the Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid is its external power supply capability. In addition to the in-cabin power outlet located in the luggage compartment, the included vehicle power connector enables the SUV to function as a 100V external power source with a maximum output of 1,500W.
According to Toyota Motor Corporation, when operating with a 400W load, the vehicle can supply electricity for approximately 6.5 days in HV power supply mode when fully charged and fueled. In the dedicated power-supply-priority mode designed to maximize operating duration, the system can provide power for around seven days.
EXTERIOR
Toyota has given the Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid several visual upgrades to distinguish it from the regular hybrid versions. PHEV-specific touches include a piano-black lower front bumper and unique LED accent lighting on the Z trim, adding a more premium and high-tech appearance.
The Toyota RAV4 GR Sport takes things even further with styling inspired by Toyota’s GR performance models, emphasizing sharper aerodynamics and a more aggressive, motorsport-inspired look.
The Toyota RAV4 GR Sport also receives functional aerodynamic upgrades, including a front lip spoiler and a wing-style rear spoiler designed to improve high-speed stability. Using CFD simulations and extensive wind tunnel testing, Toyota engineered these components to reduce lift, optimize aerodynamic balance, and generate usable downforce across a wide speed range for sharper handling confidence.
Toyota has also made significant structural upgrades to the Toyota RAV4 GR Sport in pursuit of sharper driving dynamics. The drive battery itself is used as a reinforcing structural member, helping increase chassis rigidity while lowering the SUV’s center of gravity.
Additional GR-specific hardware, including the GR Performance Damper and GR Brace, further improves stability and handling precision. Toyota has also fine-tuned the suspension for smoother damping control and recalibrated the electric power steering system to deliver a more direct and responsive feel in both Normal and Sport modes.
INTERIOR
The cabin of the Toyota RAV4 GR Sport continues the performance theme with a range of GR-exclusive details. Sport seats featuring GR logos, padded knee supports on the center console, aluminum pedals, and GR-branded scuff plates all help create a more driver-focused atmosphere. A unique instrument display further reinforces the sporty personality of the model.
