Toyota has introduced a subtle yet meaningful update to the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado in Japan, just two years after its domestic debut. While the 2026 update may appear minor on the surface, it brings important improvements in safety and anti-theft technology.
EXTERIOR
The exterior design remains unchanged, continuing with the Prado’s signature boxy styling. However, the color lineup has been refreshed. A new Neutral Black shade replaces the previous Black, while a single-tone Sand Yellow option (without a contrasting white roof) has been added. These join existing finishes like Platinum White and Avant-Garde Bronze.
One notable exterior enhancement is the availability of round Bi-Beam LED headlights for the VX variant—previously exclusive to the First Edition. These headlights offer a more classic aesthetic compared to the standard rectangular LED units and align with similar updates seen in newer Land Cruiser models in other markets.
INTERIOR
Inside, the updates are more substantial. The VX trim now features Toyota’s Teammate Advanced Drive system, which includes functions such as traffic jam assist, driver monitoring, cross-traffic alert, lane change assist, and emergency steering assist. Comfort has also been improved with an 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat with memory function and a standard 4-way power-adjustable front passenger seat.
A key focus of this update is enhanced security. Given that the Prado is frequently among the most stolen vehicles in Japan, Toyota has introduced advanced anti-theft measures. These include a system that detects the proximity of the smart key—preventing the vehicle from being unlocked or started if the key isn’t nearby. Additionally, the T-Connect “My Start Lock” feature allows owners to remotely disable engine ignition.
POWERTRAIN
Mechanically, the SUV remains unchanged. It continues to be powered by a 2.7-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine producing 160 horsepower and 246 Nm of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.
In Japan, the 7-seater Prado VX Gasoline 4WD is now priced from 5,779,400 yen, reflecting an increase of 329,400 yen. Looking ahead, a more powerful turbocharged diesel variant is expected to join the lineup in December.
