BYD DOLPHIN G DM-I:
BYD has recently released official images of the Dolphin G DM-i, a plug-in hybrid model developed specifically for the European market. The vehicle claims a combined driving range of up to 1,000 km and is scheduled for its official launch in June, with customer deliveries expected to begin in the fall.
EXTERIOR:
In terms of styling, the BYD Dolphin G DM-i adopts a hatchback silhouette tailored to European preferences. The front end features a minimalist design, highlighted by single-piece headlamps that rise toward the outer edges and are linked by a central black trim strip bearing the BYD logo. Lower down, the fascia incorporates an active air intake grille alongside dynamic side air guides that enhance both appearance and aerodynamic functionality.
From the side, the Dolphin G DM-i adopts a sweeping, upward-flowing character line that gives the hatchback a distinctly sporty stance. Details such as semi-flush door handles and black-finished petal-inspired wheels strengthen its modern appeal. In terms of size, the new model stretches 4.16 meters long and 1.825 meters wide, making it more compact in length but broader in stance than today’s Dolphin.
INTERIOR:
The interior of the BYD Dolphin G DM-i has yet to be fully revealed, although official imagery shows prominent “G” logos embossed on the headrests and a large central infotainment display integrated into the dashboard. The vehicle body also features camera hardware for its driver-assistance system, though LiDAR sensors are absent. The hatchback is expected to be equipped with an entry-level version of BYD’s proprietary “God’s Eye” autonomous driving technology.
POWERTRAIN:
BYD has not yet disclosed detailed technical specifications for the new model, confirming only that its combined driving range exceeds 1,000 km. European media reports suggest that the regional version may utilize components shared with the locally produced BYD Atto 2 crossover.
In Europe, the Atto 2 DM-i employs a DM-i plug-in hybrid system combining a naturally aspirated 1.5-liter gasoline engine producing 98 hp with a single front-mounted electric motor. Total system output is rated at either 166 hp or 212 hp, depending on the variant. Battery choices include 7.8 kWh and 18 kWh packs. Under the WLTP cycle, the smaller battery enables up to 40 km of electric-only driving and a 930 km total range, while the larger battery increases electric range to 90 km and delivers a combined range of 1,000 km.
The BYD Dolphin G DM-i is set to make its full European reveal in the weeks ahead, marking the next step in BYD’s regional expansion. The first units are expected to reach European showrooms by late summer.
