Mitsubishi Motors has confirmed the comeback of the iconic Pajero, while also revealing the model’s official launch schedule.
The legendary Mitsubishi Pajero enjoyed a long production run from 1982 to 2021, winning over more than 3.25 million customers in over 170 countries. Ever since the final fourth-generation model left the stage, rumors of a comeback have surfaced repeatedly, though Mitsubishi Motors remained silent on the matter. Earlier this year, a rally-inspired company video reignited speculation after viewers spotted an SUV many believed hinted at a next-generation Pajero. Now, the wait is over: Mitsubishi has officially confirmed the return of the iconic nameplate, releasing a teaser preview and announcing a projected launch date.
The only teaser image, presented in a darkened format, reveals T-shaped headlight elements featuring a lighting signature distinct from the vehicle shown in the January video.
Speculation surrounding the return of the Mitsubishi Pajero has been building for quite some time. Early theories linked the SUV to the current Nissan Patrol, but later reports from Japanese media suggested it would instead share its foundations with the Mitsubishi Triton (L200) pickup — and it turns out they were right. Mitsubishi has now confirmed that the revived Pajero will adopt the truck’s high-strength ladder-frame construction, paired with a suspension setup specifically retuned for passenger-SUV duties. Importantly, the company is positioning the model as its new flagship SUV, placing it above the forthcoming Pajero Sport, which is also expected to derive from the Triton.
Mitsubishi Motors has offered the first official glimpse of the upcoming SUV, releasing a teaser image highlighting the headlights and bold “PAJERO” lettering — a clear indication that the fifth-generation 2027 Pajero is on the horizon.
Although the Pajero badge enjoys strong global recognition, Mitsubishi has long marketed the SUV as Montero in several countries. The newly launched teaser page confirms that this dual naming strategy will continue, with the next-generation model wearing the Montero badge in selected regions.
Mitsubishi Motors has not yet disclosed technical details regarding the engine lineup, powertrain, platform, dimensions, or the model’s official launch timing. The teaser webpage concludes with the phrase “To be continued…”
As a result, key specifications — including whether the new model will employ a diesel, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, or an updated four-wheel-drive system — remain unconfirmed pending further announcements from Mitsubishi.
If the new Mitsubishi Pajero is positioned as a genuine off-road SUV, its likely rivals would include models such as the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, Toyota 4Runner, Ford Everest, Isuzu MU-X, and Nissan Patrol/Armada. In certain markets, it could also compete with more adventure-focused SUVs including the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Ford Bronco.
