MITSUBISHI PAJERO:

Mitsubishi Motors has officially confirmed that the Pajero nameplate is making a comeback, bringing one of the Japanese automaker’s most recognizable SUV names back to the market. The company has released an initial teaser image of the upcoming model and confirmed that more information will follow as development progresses.

The return of the Pajero marks a significant moment for Mitsubishi. The original SUV was produced from 1982 until 2021 and built a strong reputation for durability, off-road capability and motorsport success. According to Mitsubishi, more than 3.25 million Pajero vehicles were sold across more than 170 countries during its production history.

The new model is expected to become Mitsubishi’s flagship SUV and will sit above the next-generation Pajero Sport in the company's lineup.

New Mitsubishi Pajero Teased

Mitsubishi's first official teaser provides only a limited view of the upcoming SUV. The image is deliberately dark, but it clearly shows the front lighting design and large “PAJERO” lettering.

The headlights feature a distinctive T-shaped lighting signature. While the teaser does not reveal the complete front-end design, the lighting elements suggest that the new SUV will combine modern styling with visual references to Mitsubishi's current design language.

The teaser follows earlier speculation surrounding a possible Pajero revival. A Mitsubishi video released earlier in the year showed a rugged SUV in a rally-inspired setting, leading to widespread discussion about whether the vehicle could be related to the legendary nameplate.

Mitsubishi has now confirmed that the Pajero is indeed returning.

Triton-Based Platform:

One of the most important details surrounding the new Pajero is its underlying construction. Mitsubishi has confirmed that the upcoming SUV will use the high-strength ladder-frame architecture associated with the Triton pickup truck.

This is significant because the previous Pajero used a different vehicle architecture. The ladder-frame construction should provide the new model with a strong foundation for demanding driving conditions and off-road use.

Pajero or Montero?

The Pajero name has strong recognition around the world, but Mitsubishi has historically used the Montero name in several international markets.

The new model will continue this naming strategy. Mitsubishi's teaser information confirms that the next-generation SUV will be marketed as the Pajero in some markets and Montero in selected regions.

This allows Mitsubishi to retain the established Pajero identity while continuing the Montero name where it has traditionally been used.

Expected Off-Road Focus:

The Pajero name has traditionally been associated with rugged terrain, long-distance travel and four-wheel-drive performance. Mitsubishi's decision to use a ladder-frame architecture for the new generation further emphasizes the vehicle's potential off-road positioning.

If the new Pajero follows this direction, it could compete with established body-on-frame SUVs such as the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, Toyota 4Runner, Ford Everest, Isuzu MU-X and Nissan Patrol.

Depending on the market, other adventure-oriented SUVs could also become competitors.

However, it is too early to make direct performance comparisons because Mitsubishi has not yet revealed the new Pajero's ground clearance, approach and departure angles, drivetrain specifications or suspension details.
