Great Wall Motor Targets the Full-Size SUV Segment with Haval HX
Great Wall Motor (GWM) appears ready to make a bold move. After years of focusing on mainstream SUVs, the company is stepping into the full-size SUV segment with the upcoming Haval HX—a potential flagship designed to rival icons like the Toyota Land Cruiser and Land Rover Defender.
Dimensions and Platform
The Haval HX will be offered in two length options: 5,138 mm and 5,299 mm, though it remains unclear whether these measurements include the rear-mounted spare wheel. The SUV measures 2,050 mm in width, 1,970 mm in height, and has a 3,000 mm wheelbase, placing it firmly in the full-size category.
For comparison, the Wey V9X stretches to 5,299 mm with a longer 3,150 mm wheelbase, while the Haval H9 is smaller at 4,950 mm (or 5,070 mm with an external spare tire) and a 2,850 mm wheelbase.
The Haval HX adopts a bold, boxy design language, drawing inspiration from classic off-roaders while incorporating premium styling cues reminiscent of the YangWang U8. A distinctive bronze-and-black two-tone finish enhances its upscale presence.
Front: Large square headlights, a prominent silver grille, and a rugged black bumper give the SUV a commanding stance. A LiDAR sensor mounted above the windshield hints at advanced driver-assistance features.
Rear: Rectangular LED taillights, a side-opening tailgate, and a rear spare wheel reinforce its off-road credentials.
Powertrain and Performance
The Haval HX is expected to debut as an all-wheel-drive plug-in hybrid, powered by GWM’s Hi4 system. Two engine options are anticipated:
1.5-liter turbocharged engine producing 167 hp
2.0-liter turbocharged engine producing 238 hp
While details about the electric motors remain undisclosed, reports suggest the flagship version will feature a 42.8 kWh battery, enabling an electric-only driving range of approximately 176–180 km, depending on configuration.
