Toyota GR Yaris
Toyota has introduced an update to its high-performance hatchback, the GR Yaris, a model known for its strong racing heritage. While the exterior design of the new GR Yaris remains largely unchanged, the latest upgrade focuses primarily on improving the driver’s interaction with the car, particularly through a redesigned steering wheel and an optional high-grip tire setup.
One of the most notable updates for the 2026 Toyota GR Yaris is the all-new steering wheel. This design was previously seen on the GR Yaris Morizo RR prototype. In terms of appearance, the steering wheel now resembles those found in high-performance Ferrari models rather than traditional Toyota vehicles. The standard Toyota badge has also been replaced with the GR emblem, reflecting Gazoo Racing’s evolving brand identity.
Beyond aesthetics, the steering wheel has been redesigned to improve functionality. Toyota received feedback from professional racing drivers who pointed out an issue with the previous steering wheel design. When making tight 180-degree turns without repositioning their hands, drivers sometimes risked pressing buttons unintentionally. To solve this, Toyota engineers reduced the diameter of the steering wheel and modified the grip to allow smoother and more flexible handling during sharp turns. The control buttons have also been repositioned so that each function has a clearly defined location, and the buttons are now backlit to make them easier to see during intense driving situations.
The steering wheel is not the only improvement. Toyota has also refined the electric power steering system to better support both high-performance road tires and track-focused tires. In addition, the torque detection range of the steering system has been expanded by adjusting the torsion bar stiffness and updating the control software.
In Japan, the 2026 GR Yaris is offered in RC and RZ High Performance variants, both equipped with the Aero Performance Package. The flagship GR Yaris RZ High Performance now comes fitted with Bridgestone Potenza Race tires mounted on 18-inch BBS forged aluminum wheels. These tires were developed through extensive real-world testing to maintain excellent grip during prolonged and demanding driving sessions.
POWERTRAIN
Under the hood, the GR Yaris retains its 1.6-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine, which produces 300 horsepower and 400 Nm of torque. Buyers can choose between a 6-speed manual transmission or an 8-speed automatic transmission equipped with paddle shifters.
Power is delivered to all four wheels through Toyota’s GR-Four all-wheel-drive system, derived from the brand’s motorsport experience. The system features an electronically controlled multi-disc clutch along with Torsen limited-slip differentials at both the front and rear axles.
PRICE
The 2026 Toyota GR Yaris is currently available for pre-order in Japan, with prices ranging from 3,617,200 to 5,882,200 yen. Toyota is expected to introduce these updates to other markets in the near future.
