Chery to Launch World’s First Diesel Plug-in Hybrid Pickup in Australia
Chery Automobile has revealed plans to introduce what it claims will be the world’s first diesel-powered plug-in hybrid electric pickup truck (Diesel PHEV) in Australia during the fourth quarter of this year. The upcoming model, currently known by its codename KP31, represents a significant step in the company’s global expansion strategy.
The vehicle was previously introduced in China under the name Rely P3X. It features a 2.5-liter diesel engine paired with a plug-in hybrid system and offers an impressive payload capacity of up to one ton, positioning it as a strong contender in the commercial pickup segment.
Chery’s entry into this market follows the successful launch of the Rely R08 pickup in China last year, which has since expanded into international markets, including Latin America and the Middle East. In certain regions, the vehicle is marketed under the name Chery Himla. The automaker also plans to develop the Rely brand into a dedicated pickup truck lineup, with future models expected to include multiple variants and alternative energy powertrains.EXTERIOR
The KP31 concept was recently showcased in Australia, with the production version scheduled to begin manufacturing in late 2026. The vehicle is a large double-cab pickup measuring approximately 5,610 mm in length. Its exterior design focuses on a rugged, off-road-ready appearance, featuring a boxy silhouette, circular headlights, prominent bumpers, and black wheel-arch cladding. While its styling echoes the bold approach seen in Jeep’s off-road pickups, it incorporates more modern and rounded design elements.POWERTRAIN
A major highlight of the KP31 is its diesel plug-in hybrid powertrain. The truck is equipped with a 2.5-liter diesel engine, though full details regarding the electric motor and battery capacity have not yet been disclosed. Earlier demonstrations in China indicated that the platform includes four-wheel drive capability, with the battery pack mounted toward the rear.
