Yamaha Introduces Tricity 300 with the World’s First Airbag System for a Commuter Scooter

Yamaha is pushing motorcycle safety to a new level as it continues developing smarter and more rider-friendly machines. Today’s motorcycles are no longer defined solely by performance and styling safety and everyday usability are becoming equally important. Reflecting this shift, Yamaha has introduced the 2026 Yamaha Tricity 300 Airbag, a landmark model that becomes the first Yamaha scooter equipped with an integrated airbag system.

To strengthen rider safety, Yamaha Motor Company partnered with Autoliv, a global specialist in automotive safety systems, to develop an airbag solution specifically designed for motorcycles. Until now, airbag technology has been largely confined to automobiles and a limited number of high-end touring motorcycles. Through this collaboration, the two companies aim to broaden access to advanced safety systems for a wider riding audience.

By incorporating an airbag system into the commuter-oriented Yamaha Tricity 300 Airbag, Yamaha underscores its commitment to raising safety standards in everyday mobility. The initiative reflects a broader move toward expanding advanced rider protection beyond premium motorcycle categories.

The airbag unit is integrated into the scooter’s front section and engineered to maximize protection in frontal impact scenarios. When onboard sensors detect a severe collision, the airbag deploys within milliseconds to help absorb rider impact energy and reduce the likelihood of serious injury.

Creating an airbag system for motorcycles involves special engineering challenges, especially when trying to maintain balance and keep enough storage space. Yamaha Motor Company and Autoliv solved these issues with a compact design that keeps the scooter practical. Even with the extra safety equipment, the Yamaha Tricity 300 Airbag still provides good storage space for everyday use.

According to Mikael Bratt, President and CEO of Autoliv, the collaboration with Yamaha supports the company’s long-term goal of improving safety for more road users. Because motorcyclists face much higher risks than car occupants, technologies like motorcycle airbags could help reduce serious injuries.

The airbag system underwent extensive validation to satisfy demanding global automotive safety standards. Testing procedures included sophisticated computer simulations alongside real-world crash evaluations to verify accurate and reliable deployment across a broad range of collision scenarios.

For readers unfamiliar with the lineup, the Yamaha Tricity 300 Airbag incorporates Yamaha’s Leaning Multi-Wheel (LMW) technology, a three-wheel architecture designed to enhance stability and cornering capability. The same technology is also employed in the Yamaha Niken.

From a styling perspective, the Yamaha Tricity 300 Airbag receives a subtle visual refresh over the previous Tricity 300. A sharper, more futuristic headlight design headlines the changes, joined by a new “duck fender” that not only improves aerodynamics but also gives the scooter a sportier, more dynamic presence.

Technology upgrades are equally notable. The dashboard now pairs a full-color TFT display with a monochrome LCD panel, mirroring the setup found on the Yamaha NMAX Turbo. The feature list has been expanded with a USB charging port, smart key operation, traction control, Cornering ABS, and smartphone connectivity with integrated Garmin navigation. Adding to its unique character is a car-inspired parking brake system designed to boost both convenience and peace of mind.

POWERTRAIN:

The Yamaha Tricity 300 Airbag uses the same engine as the Yamaha XMAX 300. It is powered by a liquid-cooled 292cc single-cylinder SOHC engine that produces 28 PS and 28.9 Nm of torque. The scooter weighs 242 kg, has a 795 mm seat height, and a 13-liter fuel tank. It uses two 120/70-14 front tires and one 140/70-14 rear tire.

In the UK, the Yamaha Tricity 300 is priced at £8,780. The airbag version developed with Autoliv is expected to launch in the first half of 2026.

With this model, Yamaha is pushing motorcycle safety forward. Adding airbag technology to a commuter scooter could inspire other manufacturers to bring more advanced safety features to everyday motorcycles.

In the end, the Yamaha Tricity 300 Airbag is more than a new scooter. It represents a shift in the motorcycle industry. Yamaha’s newest innovation shows that rider safety should not be a luxury feature, but a standard that can help protect every rider on the road.
