Yamaha Introduces Tricity 300 with the World’s First Airbag System for a Commuter Scooter
Yamaha continues to innovate in its pursuit of delivering safer and more advanced motorcycles for everyday riders. As technology evolves, modern motorcycles are becoming not only more comfortable and stylish but also significantly safer. In its latest breakthrough, Yamaha has introduced the 2026 Yamaha Tricity 300 Airbag, a groundbreaking model equipped with the world’s first airbag system fitted to a Yamaha scooter.
To enhance rider protection, Yamaha Motor Co. collaborated with Autoliv, Inc., a global leader in automotive safety systems, to develop a motorcycle-specific airbag technology. Until now, airbag systems have been largely limited to automobiles or extremely expensive touring motorcycles. Through this partnership, Yamaha and Autoliv aim to make advanced safety technology accessible to a wider range of riders.
By integrating an airbag system into the commuter-focused Tricity 300, Yamaha is demonstrating its commitment to bringing higher safety standards to everyday transportation. The move signals a shift toward making advanced rider protection available beyond premium motorcycle segments.
The airbag system is seamlessly integrated into the scooter’s front panel and is designed to provide maximum protection during frontal collisions. When sensors detect a severe impact, the airbag deploys within milliseconds, helping to absorb the kinetic energy of the rider and reduce the risk of serious injury.
Developing an airbag system for motorcycles presents unique engineering challenges, particularly in maintaining vehicle balance while preserving storage space. Yamaha and Autoliv addressed these challenges with a compact yet robust design that does not compromise the scooter’s practicality. Despite the additional safety hardware, the Tricity 300 still offers ample storage capacity for daily commuting needs.
According to Mikael Bratt, President and CEO of Autoliv, the partnership with Yamaha is part of the company’s long-term strategy to improve safety for a broader range of road users. Motorcyclists face significantly higher risks than car occupants, and innovations like motorcycle airbags could play a crucial role in reducing severe injuries on the road.
The system’s reliability has been rigorously tested to meet strict global automotive standards. Validation procedures included advanced computer simulations as well as real-world crash testing to ensure that the airbag deploys accurately and effectively under a wide range of accident scenarios.
For those unfamiliar with the Tricity lineup, the model features Yamaha’s Leaning Multi-Wheel (LMW) technology, which utilizes a three-wheel configuration for improved stability and cornering performance. This system is also used on another Yamaha model, the Niken.
Visually, the Tricity 300 Airbag introduces subtle design updates compared to the previous Tricity 300. The scooter features a redesigned, more futuristic headlamp and a new “duck fender” that enhances both aerodynamics and the overall sporty appearance.
The scooter also receives several technology upgrades. Its instrument cluster now combines a color TFT display with a monochrome LCD panel, similar to the setup found on the NMAX Turbo. Additional features include a USB charging port, smart key system, traction control, Cornering ABS, and smartphone connectivity with Garmin GPS integration. Another distinctive feature is its car-like parking brake system, which adds convenience and security.
Under the bodywork, the Tricity 300 shares its engine with the Yamaha XMAX 300. It is powered by a liquid-cooled 292cc single-cylinder SOHC engine producing 28 PS of power and 28.9 Nm of torque. The three-wheel scooter weighs 242 kg, has a seat height of 795 mm, and carries 13 liters of fuel. It rides on two 120/70-14 inch front tires and a 140/70-14 inch rear tire.
In the UK market, the Yamaha Tricity 300 is priced at £8,780. The airbag-equipped version developed with Autoliv is scheduled to reach the market in the first half of 2026.
With this launch, Yamaha is setting a new benchmark in motorcycle safety. The introduction of airbag technology on a commuter scooter could encourage other manufacturers to prioritize advanced safety features in their mass-produced models.
Ultimately, the Tricity 300 Airbag represents more than just a new scooter—it symbolizes a shift in the industry. Yamaha’s latest innovation proves that rider safety should not be considered a luxury feature, but a standard that benefits every motorcyclist on the road.
