BYD RACCO KEI CAR
Chinese automaker BYD has been offering its passenger vehicles in Japan for some time, gradually expanding its lineup in the market. The company initially introduced the all-electric Atto 3 SUV and Dolphin hatchback, followed by the eco-focused Seal sedan and Sealion 7 crossover. Toward the end of last year, BYD also launched the Sealion 6 hybrid SUV (which carries different names in China). Despite these efforts, the brand has yet to gain strong traction in Japan. However, according to BYD’s own data, sales increased by 68% in 2025, reaching 3,742 units. To strengthen its presence, the company is preparing a new model called the Racco, developed specifically for Japan’s popular kei car segment.
The compact vehicle made its debut last autumn at the Japan Mobility Show in Tokyo. BYD has now launched a dedicated promotional website, revealing the first official images of the Racco’s interior along with additional details. Before discussing the cabin, the company has also provided a closer look at the model’s exterior design.
EXTERIOR
The BYD Racco is an electric minivan equipped with standard sliding rear doors. Its boxy silhouette and tall roofline reflect the traditional styling of kei-class vehicles. The front end features headlights with C-shaped LED daytime running lights connected by a body-colored trim piece, while the rear is highlighted by full-width taillights forming a continuous light bar. As previously reported, the vehicle measures 3,395 mm in length, 1,475 mm in width, and 1,800 mm in height—dimensions that comply with Japan’s kei car regulations.
INTERIOR
Inside, the Racco offers a modern, minimalist cabin with a clean dashboard layout, a three-spoke steering wheel, and separate digital screens for the instrument cluster and infotainment system. Beneath the center console, two rows of physical buttons provide controls for climate functions and other key features.
POWERTRAIN
The Racco has been officially confirmed as a front-wheel-drive model, although BYD has not yet disclosed the electric motor’s power output. The company has announced two battery options, approximately 20 kWh and 30 kWh. The smaller battery is expected to deliver a driving range of more than 200 km, while the larger option should provide over 300 km on a single charge.
The BYD Racco is scheduled to go on sale in Japan this summer, with additional specifications and details to be released closer to the launch date.
